The other day InStyle Magazine posted an article on their Twitter account divulging who celebrities look up to as a style icon (You can check out the article here.) The collection of icons ranged from the classics of Grace Kelly to the new wave of fashion idols like Chloe Sevigny. The post really got me thinking about icons and how someone (and their style) gets to such a level. More importantly, it got me wondering: who is my style icon?
I figured the best way to narrow down my style icon was to break down the process into 2 easy steps: #1 Define icon and how it relates to fashion. #2 Find someone who fits the style icon criteria. (I may also in the way far back of my mind consider that knowing these things will help me in my personal endeavor to become an icon….don’t judge).
#1. Ever look up the definition of icon? Well, in the chance that you have not you may be surprised to know that the definitions listed contain the following: a picture or image, a picture of Christ or a saint, a sign of something by virtue, or the little graphic image on a computer screen. Hmmm…I don’t InStyle was referencing a religious picture when they asked Katie Holmes who her style icon was. The only reference to what we were looking for was the one that stated an icon was a person or thing that is idolized. Ok, so we are looking for someone who has a style that we idolize. That should be easy, right?
#2. Deciding who I would label my style icon seemed so much harder the more I thought about who to chose. I wanted to find someone who captured my ideal style when they were floating down a red carpet in Louboutins and when they were strolling out of a Starbucks in Chucks. So I thought to myself, if you could jump in one person’s closet who would it be? Answer: Solange Knowles. The younger sister to the almighty Queen B (Beyonce) has completely stolen my affection. I mean who in the world manages to marry vintage styles with modern ease? This girl can look like an angel from heaven in a structured plain white dress and then punch you in the face with a bold floral print. Coming from a girl who loves a pattern….how could I not pick her?
The reality is I don’t know that I can stick to just one style icon and the more I think about it, the more I am OK with that. The best thing about fashion is that it evolves and in turn, your style personal style will also grow. It’s OK to have one style icon to look up to and it’s OK to have five, or ten, or a hundred. So, today it’s Solange. Tomorrow; who knows!?Pin It
