When I first started to plan for our upcoming wedding, I knew that my number one objective would be to find a venue. Before buying the dress you’d always had in mind from winnie couture, for example, or even figuring out a date for the wedding, the venue should be a top priority. The location of a wedding truly sets the tone of the occasion and is one of the most important aspects of the big day. The space you choose should be one that reflects you as a couple and one that excites you.
For Aaron and I, we knew that a traditional wedding venue wouldn’t be for us. We wanted a unique space that felt comforting and intimate. This meant something small and a location that really represented us as a couple and our style. Luckily for us (and all the couples out there), there are lots of unique locations that are willing to transform their space into the venue of your dreams. From botanical gardens to public libraries, there truly is a place for each and every couple.
Here are six unique wedding venues that might just be the perfect space for your big day.
In my mind, I want our wedding to feel like a dinner party with our closest friends and family. This is probably why when I sat down to make my list of venues to visit, I immediately started writing down restaurants that I love. Restaurants are a great space for weddings that have a focus on food and for couples who are looking for an informal feel (….me!). Most major cities have a large number of restaurants that offer wedding services and some even include an event coordinator that will act as your ‘wedding planner’ without having to actually hire/pay one. In my experience touring various restaurants in Philadelphia, some will have a space available just for the wedding while others will ask that you rent out the restaurant itself.
Within the same theme of restaurants, breweries and distilleries are also a great option for hosting a wedding. The space is usually unique designs and they often offer an incredible bar package for your guests. Similar to restaurants, you will find a range of spaces to choose from. From rustic warehouses to chic/modern layouts, there is usually something for everyone in terms of aesthetic. In Philadelphia, there is also a nice range in terms of size. Some spaces can hold 150+ people for a seated dinner, while others provide a more intimate setting for small parties. Some cities (Philadelphia included) even have private beer gardens which are a perfect venue for an outdoor wedding.
Nothing screams romance like being married with a backdrop of stunning greenery and florals, am I right? This is why I am in love with the idea of hosting a wedding in a botanical garden. While I don’t think this is the direction we will take, I have seen numerous botanical wedding features online and they are an absolute dream! While you can host a wedding of any size in this setting, gardens are the perfect way to host a large wedding while still keeping an intimate feel. Were we having a larger wedding, I would hand down be paying any amount to host it in one of the locations below.
Remember when Carrie Bradshaw decided to host her wedding in a library in the first Sex and the City movie? Yea, I was jealous too because it is the perfect spot to host a wedding. Writer or not, this setting for a wedding is a unique space for all sorts of couples. Now, most cities have one to two public libraries so if you find it challenging to book this venue for your special day, you can also try a museum. Luckily for my East Coast people, Philadelphia has a bunch to choose from. Most of these venues will be built for a larger wedding party, although I have found that some will allow smaller weddings to use a specific room/wing of the building for a cheaper price.
Even if you are not a thespian personally, hosting your wedding in a theater can be a really incredible experience. From the detailed architecture to the endless amounts of photo opportunities, a theater proves to be one of the most unique ways to tie the knot. From my research, theaters allow couples to be creative when it comes to the layout and design of their reception. While some theaters will require you to bring in catering, most will have a liquor license and the necessary setup (tables, chairs, etc..) which can make planning a lot easier than you might think!
