Today’s quick quote is one that gave me a good bitch-slap when I stumbled across it on Tiny Buddha. These words from Joyce Meyer made me stop and think about how I act in my own life. Do I wait until things seem ‘perfect’ before I start to enjoy myself? Do I disregard the good that already exists with things in their present state? Do I think if I do better or have more and then I will be happier? Yes, a million times over.
While I don’t like to admit it openly, I have always struggled with gratitude. That’s not to say I am ungrateful, but it is to say that the perfectionist in me is always wanting. Wanting a new hand bag, a better job, a smaller waist line, a more active social life. These are all great things and it’s okay to want and work for something more, but it’s not okay to wait until you have everything you think you want and need before you enjoy the life you have. The reason it’s not okay is because there will always be something to want. As life evolves, there will continue to be more materialistic things and more personal achievements to crave. This is natural so accept that as the truth. Where the work comes in is not depending on the things you can achieve to find happiness. You already have things that exist in your life right now that you can enjoy – including the journey that you take towards a better you.
Think about all of the things you want right now. It won’t take long to write the list, I promise you that. Now, write an equally long list of the things you have that are already great. Finding appreciation in the things that already exist in your life will allow for you to enjoy the life you have a lot more and it will even help when you are striving towards something greater.
Lately, I have been taking 5-10 minutes each morning to list out a few things I am grateful for; things that allow me to enjoy life just as it is. Try to practice this throughout the week and let me know if it helps you. You can also feel free to share some of your favorite ways to enjoy life in the comment section below.Pin It
