Maybe it’s the colder weather that has been putting me into hibernation mode or my sweet tooth is starting to take over my whole mouth, but I have been craving sweet treats all month long. While I try not to indulge too much, it sometimes takes over and I end up working my way into the kitchen to bake up a treat.
This past week I decided to indulge in a sweet snack that I could enjoy both on the couch and on the go: Muddy Buddies. This snack combines some of my all-time favorite things: cereal, chocolate and peanut butter. It really doesn’t get much better.
One of the best things about Muddy Buddies (aside from the taste) is how incredibly simple they are to make. You can pull together a simple recipe in just 5 ingredients and add from there if you want. For my batch I used the standard Rice Chex cereal, unsalted butter, chocolate chips, powered sugar and of course – peanut butter! Feel free to use any flavor of Chex cereal (rumor has it, they have chocolate!)
After melting down the butter, chocolate chips, a splash of vanilla and peanut butter (I chose to heat my ingredients on the stove, but you can melt everything down in the microwave too), I poured the mix on top of the Chex cereal. After marveling in the dreamy chocolate sauce for a minute, I then mixed them all together!
I prefer to mix the chocolate sauce with the cereal prior to adding the powered sugar so that the sugar can just stick onto the cereal rather than melt into the chocolate. Most people add this mix and the powered sugar to a bag to shake things up, but I just covered the bowl with stick & seal saran wrap and started shaking.
To intensify the peanut butter flavor (because….why not?) I also mixed in a cup of the Reese’s cereal. You can skip this step or add other toppings like Reese’s Pieces.
I also like to lay the mix out on a sheet to give it time to cool down and I prefer to store it in the fridge to keep the snack fresh!Pin It
