Sretna Ponedjeljak my favorite people! I’d like to start this week’s Motivational Monday by saying I have been pretty damn happy lately. That’s right – I said it. Sure I have had some moments of irritation or annoyance, but overall there has been this odd sense of calm wrapped up in a warm blanket of happy.
The problem you ask? Well, with this recent state of happiness, I have been struggling on finding ideas and discussions for this week’s post. So is that the moral of the story: once you find some sort of peace in life you don’t need any motivation? Well according to William Saroyan, yes. When I stumbled on this quote I actually laughed a little because it is true. Some of the most beautiful pieces of writing come from the darkest places in one’s life. Now will someone piss me off so we can get this going?
Well, if my misery isn’t going to make for a post this week, then we are all just going to have to be happy this week (dammit). The topic of happiness is a touchy one and in my research done for this post, it might be one of the most debatable topics I have yet to write about. Overall I have seen happiness defined as an emotion, a choice, a means of travel, and (if you ask any of the Beatles) it is also a warm gun. Of all of the definitions that I have seen, I have to side with my girl Elizabeth Gilbert who said that “People tend to think that happiness is a stroke of luck, something that will descend like fine weather if you’re fortunate. But happiness is the result of personal effort. You fight for it, strive for it, insist upon it, and sometimes even travel around the world looking for it. You have to participate relentlessly.” Can you see why she is my favorite?
It is up for debate, but happiness is without a doubt the endless search that we will all participate in throughout our lives. We will crave it, we will beg for it and we will build an endless desire for it. Happiness is never an easy emotion to find, but it is also effortless to feel. Think about all of the times that you have sat at a table and cried from laughing so hard with your best friend. The times you smiled while watching your child discover something for the first time. And don’t forget the time you looked into the eyes of a man who made your heart actually skip a beat. That pure and genuine happiness that burned inside of you during that moment…that is the very thing that we will spend our whole lives chasing.
So maybe happiness is really something that is made up of all of the ideas that we have. It is an emotion, but it’s also a choice and it will definitely be part of the journey that we take in our lives.
