Let it be known: ya girl loves a good cup of coffee. Over the years my taste for coffee has grown exponentially. Not only do I find myself wanting to try different roasts and blends, but I often have to refrain from having more than 1-2 cups a day! This passion for a good brew has led me to this new series on the blog called Current Coffee Cravings. I know that there are some die-hard coffee lovers out there who will appreciate this series (or at least I hope so). So, each month I will be sharing a favorite brew from various brands. This month we are taking a look at the only thing I will order when grabbing a coffee to go: The Flat White.
I hate to admit this, but I am a coffee snob. There are some brands I won’t even drink and when grabbing coffee out (versus making it at home), I am only interested in a crafted drink. That may sound pretentious of me, but why pay someone for a black coffee when I can french press my own at home? Instead, I go for those pompous drinks that cost a fortune, but taste so damn good. One day while grabbing a coffee on my way to work, I decided to veer away from my usual soy milk latte and try a flat white. This moment changed everything.
A flat white is very similar to a normal latte in that it is composed of espresso and a milk of choice. What distinguishes a flat white from your standard latte is how the milk is prepared. Most lattes include milk that is frothed (also known as microfoam); however, the milk in a flat white is heated in a way that produces less microfoam. This leaves the the drink less diluted and therefore, a much stronger cup of brew.
When I first heard of the flat white, I didn’t think there was a point. Sure, there is less foam involved, but does that really leave you with a different taste? The answer is yes – a million times yes. While I do enjoy the taste of a latte, a flat white has a more velvety texture and comes with a taste that is bold. Because there is less foam, you get a smooth/creamy blend of espresso and milk which (in my opinion) is a much better cup of coffee. I personally opt for soy or oat milk in my drinks and both options pair nicely with the flat white.
