I used to be an amazing reader. Granted, I used to spend two hours a day on a train in and out of the city for work, but overall I was dedicated to reading as many books as possible. Memoirs were my favorite with a second love for a well written fiction novel. I would devour books with ease which is why when you walk into my home, there are an array of shelves with beautifully stacked books atop them.

I am no longer this person.

The past few years I have been whatever you can imagine the opposite of that person is. It is very possible that I have read only 4 or 5 books in the past 15 months. For someone who previously read 2-3 books a month, well – that is just shameful.

I feel that the only way to deal with this situation is to admit that there is a problem (see above text annnnnd check) and to challenge myself to be a better reader. With that being said: there are a little less than three months left in the year; a total of 84 days to be exact. The challenge, which I do accept, is to read 5 books in those next 84 days.

People often suggest making realistic short-term goals for yourself. This, of course, is so that you do not overwhelm yourself and then crash/burn when you fail to achieve said goals. Reading the same number of books in 3 months that I have read in the past 15 months, seems like an unrealistic goal, but here’s the thing – I know that I am capable of this. I’ve easily conquered this level of reading in this time frame before, so I am setting the bar high and pursuing this seemingly unrealistic goal for myself.

Now for the good part….Here are the books I am adding to my ‘Hurry Up & Read These’ book list.

I will be reporting back with a book review for each book that I read to keep me accountable & to entertain all of you. In the meantime, check out these book options (below) and be sure to leave book suggestions in the comment section. I plan on taking this new habit all the way to 2019 with me.

How to Be a Good Creature by Sy Montgomery

Stay With Me by Ayobami Adebayo

Less by Andrew Sean Greer

The Lonely City by Olivia Laing

American Like Me by America Ferrera
