This month I am bringing back the Book of the Month series and I am doing it in a big way. The second I put this book down I was immediately at my computer developing this post. This book is truly filled with magic, so much so that I have been motivated to get shit done ever since I finished it.
I should start this review by admitting that I am huge fan of Elizabeth Gilbert’s work. Most people love and praise Elizabeth for her book Eat, Pray, Love, but my admiration for her as an author extends well beyond her infamous travels across the world. Everything from her fiction to her follow up memoirs have grabbed at my heart. However, this book is in a realm all it’s own. It is, essentially, a get off your ass and live the purposeful life you have always dreamed of by working hard and listening to the signs that the World has to offer. This is the book that begs you to tap into the creative spirit that sits inside you and to make good use of that very energy.
While Elizabeth does reference her passion for writing throughout the book, there is no limit as to how to apply the ‘big magic’ to your own life. If you love math, cooking, medicine, art, anything… big magic can help you turn those desires into a reality. This book will jump into you, find the hungry fervent beast that sits deep inside your gut and will rip him right from your body. It’s almost impossible to read this book and deny any dream or passion that you’ve been holding onto.
One of the most important aspects of this book (which moved me more than I thought it would) was the attention that Elizabeth gave to the topic of fear. I have personally struggled with fear and have allowed it to hold me back from many things in my own life so I was very in tune with the concept of fear and what it can do to your dreams. Think about the word ‘fear’ for a minute and what comes to your mind? I bet you think about it much like the emotion that comes with the word. Commonly, we think fear equals scared or terrifying; however, those are just the added emotions that come with fear. Fear is actually defined as an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain, or a threat. Basically, the real issue with fear is the belief that there is something so dangerous out there it will cause us pain or threaten us in some way. When I think about my dreams there are, of course, the fears of failure and disappointment, but is there really something that dangerous out there that it will cause me harm? No! This book makes you take a good look at those crazy ideas we have about fear and how letting those go can break down the walls that keep us from working towards our aspirations.
One thing I can promise you about this book is that no matter what it is you love to do, you will be inspired to get started the second you put this book down. When reading through Big Magic, I would read each chapter and instantly be motivated to work on something I love (this blog, photo editing, writing, etc..). It’s hard to read Elizabeth’s encouraging words and deny yourself the opportunity to make your dreams happen. I recommend this book for anyone and everyone because even if you are already living your dream, would a little extra big magic hurt? I think not.
