This was a pretty slow month of reading for me. While I can usually take in 2+ books in a month, I only got to tackle one these past few weeks. On the bright side, it made it that much easier to choose which one I would feature.
I originally picked up Dark Places because there was no denying the work of Gillian Flynn after a novel like Gone Girl. Although I have never previously been into mystery novels, I can’t help but be drawn to the suspense that builds throughout Gillian’s books. After devouring Gone Girl I had to scoop up both additional books (Dark Paces & Sharp Objects) to see what else this infamous author had in store for us.
I will start by saying, of all three novels by Gillian Flynn, Gone Girl is the exception. The story is much longer and much more detailed than the other books and for that, it makes the competition unfair. However, Dark Places does have some credibility of it’s own. Prepare yourself for some twisted story lines laced with lots of dark family secrets; however, there’s a thick plot that keeps the book in your hands. You will feel sympathy and rage for each character you meet in the book and as the story unfolds, you will be sure to have that ‘What the hell…’ moment.
Overall, this is a quick, but good read. A suspenseful read that will hold your interest and will make you want to keep reading to find out ‘who did it.’
