As someone who struggles with commitment in certain areas of her life, I have decided that I am going to make 2018 the year of commitment (pun somewhat intended). My goal is to find areas in my life where I need to create healthy habits that make a positive impact. One of the areas lacking any sort of habit is reading. I used to be an avid reader and would consume 2-3 books a month. However, over the past few years I have allowed other things (aka binging on Hulu) to take some of the time I used to devote to a good read. Well, that is about to change and in order to hold myself accountable I am starting a new series on this new(ish) blog called Monthly Reads.

This month’s book is actually a re-read for me. I first read The Year of Yes in early in 2017 and it was hands down one of my favorite books of the year. So much so that I am taking in all in again. Shonda is a powerhouse when it comes to television, but she is also a damn good inspiration when it comes to getting off your ass and facing the things that scare you.

The book is based around Shonda who, like many of us, admits just how unapologetic she was about saying no to the things that made her uncomfortable. After an insult from her sister, she decided she would take a year of her life and use that time to say yes to everything that scared her. No more excuses, no more hiding, and no more fear. Along with getting an insight into how saying yes allowed Shonda to live a happier life on her terms, you also get to learn about her outlook on marriage, children, and how it feels to own Thursday night television.

This book is a must read for those looking to get out of their own shadow and into their own life.
